The Upward Bound Advisor supports the planning, implementation, and deliveryof comprehensive pre-college services designed to prepare eligible high school students for successful entry into and completion of post-secondary education. The Advisor works collaboratively with the Upward Bound Program Director and program staff to ensure compliance with U.S. Department of Education TRIO grant objectives while fostering strong partnerships with target schools, families, and community stakeholders. This position provides direct student advising, academic support, outreach, and program coordination.
The Upward Bound Advisor is responsible for delivering direct services to program participants while supporting the day-to-day operations of the Upward Bound program. Reporting to the Upward Bound Program Director, the Advisor assists with outreach and recruitment, academic advising and case management, curriculum delivery, program planning, and data reporting.
The Upward Bound Advisor manages a caseload of eligible Upward Bound participants and ensures services align with federal TRIO objectives and annual reporting requirements. This role requires collaboration with program staff, school personnel, families, and campus partners to promote participant persistence, academic achievement, and college readiness.
Major Responsibilities:
Outreach, Recruitment & Community Engagement
- Design, coordinate, and facilitate outreach and recruitment activities targeting eligible Upward Bound students and families.
- Assist with the development of promotional materials, applications, and recruitment strategies in digital and print formats.
- Conduct informational sessions, workshops, and recruitment events at target schools and community sites.
- Represent the Upward Bound program at school and community events to promote awareness and participation.
- Identify prospective participants and make admission recommendations to the Program Director.
Academic Advising, Counseling & Case Management
- Manage a caseload of no fewer than 55 Upward Bound participants.
- Develop and implement individualized educational plans based on student needs and program objectives.
- Provide one-on-one and small group academic advising, mentoring, and counseling.
- Monitor academic progress through grades, transcripts, assessments, and tutoring participation.
- Support students with college admissions and financial aid processes.
- Provide referrals to social services and other support resources as needed.
- Track participant persistence and postsecondary outcomes for federal reporting purposes.
Program Implementation, Curriculum & Student Services
- Research, develop, and facilitate college readiness, study skills, life skills, and career exploration workshops.
- Coordinate and support tutoring services, study skills sessions, ACT preparation, and academic enrichment activities.
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the six-week summer program.
- Organize and chaperone college visits, academic enrichment trips, and program excursions.
- Collaborate with target school personnel, campus partners, and community organizations to deliver programming.
Operational Support & Institutional Engagement
- Assist with supervision of student workers, tutors, and office support staff as assigned.
- Support daily office operations, including front-line communication with students, families, and visitors.
- Participate in the Center for Pre-College Programs departmental, SEMSS divisional, and TRIO Upward Bound program meetings.
- Maintain program materials, supplies, and communication boards.
- Collaborate with the Center for Pre-College Programs and other university departments.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of Upward Bound, the Center for Pre-College Programs, and the Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success.
Key Job Responsibilities: - Develops and evaluates curriculum and programs and provides recommendations for improvement
- Schedules, secures, and communicates logistics and resources in support of a pre-college program
- Serves as a main point of contact to students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements
- May assist with monitoring of pre-college program budget spending
- Provides support in identifying appropriate fields of study, career options, or programs and refers students to appropriate resources
- Delivers pre-college program content and materials to community members
- Leads the implementation of program policies and procedures through oversight of day-to-day activities for program staff and student and community volunteers
- Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the pre-college program
- Researches, develops, and facilitates pre-college program content and materials

Through programming, tutoring, academic skill-building, enrichment workshops, college visits, residential experiences, and exposure to higher education environments, our programs promote academic growth, meaningful engagement, and readiness for post-secondary success.
Our primary goal is to increase high school graduation rates, college enrollment, and degree completion. We believe education is a powerful tool for personal growth and community impact. Many students face barriers that can influence their educational aspirations, access to college, and long-term success, and our work is focused on helping students navigate and overcome those challenges.
The Center for Pre-College Programs serves students across multiple stages of the educational journey, from early exposure to higher education through college preparation and persistence. Through academic-year and summer initiatives, we create supportive learning environments that encourage exploration, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging as students move toward their educational and career goals.
Target Salary Range: $45,000 - $51,000. (Final salary offer will be determined based on qualifications and experience)
Required Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field.
- Experience working with low-income, first-generation, underrepresented, and/or educationally disadvantaged student populations.
- Experience providing academic advising, mentoring, counseling, or student support services.
- Experience designing and facilitating educational workshops, programming, or group activities.
Preferred Qualifications: - Knowledge of or experience working with U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs.
- Experience with program evaluation, data collection, databases, and reporting systems.
- Experience conducting outreach and recruitment in school or community-based settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to educational access, equity, and student success.
- At leave two (2) years of experience working in a high school and/or higher education setting.
